Minister confirms no garuda argument on black box recorders

Dhaka (AsiaNews) May 23 – In India, it appears that no one has been killed in a remote area during a drone attack on a truck transporting black box recordings of the victims of a terrorist attack.

The media reports that the drone that struck the truck and killed at least six black boxes in the area has been identified as the Kalashnikov Sahel, a Russian-made "truck killer" that targets small trucks operating in the Kalashnikov-dominated sub-Sahara region in eastern Nigeria.

The trucks are used for resupply of insurgent groups, including Boko Haram.

In a letter to the Government of India, the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) wrote that "no garuda-type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remotely-controlled by the local population as a result of a UAS, would not be an acceptable target for such weapon."

According to CSMonitor.org, Nigerian authorities launched a massive search operation to find the vehicle that was used for killing the six victims. On May 13, an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a remote-controlled camera (the Predator) was destroyed on the side of the road at Khazalari village. A large black box weighing 3 tonnes was recovered. But as of May 12, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had yet to disclose the name of the attacker, as he was detained by military officials before being identified by Nigerian intelligence.

The US State Department issued a statement in 2010 that the Predator should not be used as a killer, as it "can take action without any human interference or monitoring from within or outside, and cannot be used for humanitarian operations like this. Such operations pose risks to civilians and their safety; civilian casualties will continue to occur, including as the result of the high death toll on the ground."

But a government official said that if it does not receive a formal reply from the MHA, the government is expected to continue with the process to identify who was behind the attack, despite the delay. The official said that government did not have a position at this stage. The MHA could not immediately be reached for comment on the latest developments.

But another government source insisted that the drone would not be used for targeting black boxes, as the government and the United States do not have a military presence in the sub-Sahara and are not interested in such operations, as well as "tribal tribal groups."
